A Meaningful Way to Share Palestinian History, Culture and Traditions

The Understanding Palestine: Poster Project is a book containing a collection of posters created to help people understand the culture, traditions, and history of Palestine. The posters can be used in a variety of educational spaces including schools, libraries, events celebrating diversity, commemorations of indigenous peoples and traditions, and more. Inspiration for the Project

In order to justify and obfuscate political violence, the perspectives of Palestinians around the world have been institutionally silenced and repressed under the guise of avoiding conflict or division. Particularly at schools and public institutions, learning about Palestine from the perspective of Palestinians is made difficult, shut down, or instantly politicized. This is made possible by anti-Palestinian racism, dehumanization, and misguided efforts to conflate a land dispossession issue with religious bigotry.

For many Palestinian students attending public schools, projects/events designed to celebrate diversity becomes a time of hesitation and reluctance. Palestinian identity is politicized and celebrating culture and traditions is met with feelings of fear. How can Palestinians speak about their culture in a way that does not leave them feeling invisible and self-censored? How can Palestinians speak about their identity and traditions without triggering others and facing a backlash of misplaced accusations? More importantly, how do we break the cycle of miseducation and allow others to learn about the the beautiful and rich traditions of Palestine and its people?

This work is an invitation to learn about Palestine and to open doors to courageous conversations centered on mutual respect, understanding, and anti-racism.
